Did you know that unlike knitting, crochet cannot be replicated by a machine? There are machines that call themselves (or rather their manufacturers call them) “crochet machines”. They weave a fabric that from a distance resembles crocheted lace. However, when looked at up close, it truly is a simple warp and weft weave! The machine just has complex templates for weaving. On the other hand, machine knitting is indistinguishable from hand knitting, assuming even tension by the hand knitter, because the machine actually creates a knit stitch for each stitch. The so-called “crochet machines” can only make woven lace fabric that looks like crochet from a distance, and there are no machines that even attempt to create a facsimile of crocheted fabric, such as a sweater or afghan. I’ve seen the fake “crocheted” curtain panels and tablecloths produced on those machines… they aren’t particularly attractive and I’ve only seen them in cheap “diner” style restaurants and WalMart’s curtain department. So, if you see a bargain priced crocheted doily (Michael’s loves to sell these as decorating accessories) sweater or afghan, you can bet your last dollar that it was produced in a sweat shop somewhere by some woman or child working for pennies… or less.

Felted Messenger Bag
Here are some before and after photos of my first felted hand bag in Mocha Heather, Oregano and Black. Why pay hundreds of dollars for a bag from Gucci, Prada or Coach when you can have a one-of-a-kind hand made bag from Sunny Daze Design. My bags are designed by me and you will not find a duplicate anywhere!

Sprout Kits - $25 - Have fresh sprouts all year round!
Get Sprouting!
Sprouts are one of the most complete and nutritional of all foods that exist. Sprouts are rich with vitamins, minerals, proteins, and enzymes. Their nutritional value was discovered by the Chinese thousands of years ago. Over the past several years numerous scientific studies have shown the importance of sprouts in a healthy diet.
Have you ever heard of a vegetable which continues to gain vitamins after you harvest it? Sprouts do this. Sprouts are LIVING foods. Even after you harvest your sprouts and refrigerate them, they will continue to grow slowly and their vitamin content will actually increase. Compare this with store-bought vegetables and fruits, which start losing their vitamin content as soon as they’re picked and often have to be shipped a thousand miles or more in the winter.
Why eat sprouts? There are many reasons. In addition to providing the highest amount of vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes of any food per unit of calorie, sprouts deliver them in a form which is easily assimilated and digested. In fact, sprouts improve the efficiency of digestion. Sprouts are also deliciously fresh and colourful.
With the current economic crisis, not to mention the fact that so much of our food supply is contaminated with pesticides and pollutants, it’s nice to know you can grow your own sprouts in your home and become more self-sufficient.
Sprouting at home takes only a few moments a day and can produce a good portion of your daily requirements of the nutrients you need from fresh produce. The hassles are minor, the costs are low, and the freshness is wonderful. It is a very effective way to add raw foods to your diet.
Sprouts are nutritious. They are baby plants in their prime. They have a greater concentration of vitamins and minerals, proteins, enzymes, phytochemicals, anti-oxidants, nitrosamines, trace minerals, bioflavinoids and chemo-protectants such as sulphoraphane and isoflavone which work against toxins, resist cell mutation and invigorate the body’s immune system than at any other point in the plant’s life even when compared with the mature vegetable.
So why pay between $2.00 – $3.00 for 100 grams of sprouts purchased at a grocery store when you can grow fresh sprouts on your counter top for pennies a batch? In 2 – 7 days you can have organic sprouts of any kind with the use of the sprouting kit below that you can use over and over again without soil!
Our kits are $25 each and include a special sprouting lid,1 litre jar, 2 sets of organic seeds to make 4 large batches of sprouts (equal to eight 100 gram packages you would buy at a grocery store) as well as detailed information.
You can also follow along as I experiment with different types of seeds via my Sprouting Photo Album.

Crochet Wire Jewelry
Lately I have been dabbling with crocheting with wire. I wanted these to be unique because there are so many people who make jewelry and I didn't want to duplicate anyone else. Above are the first 14 I have made over the last couple of weeks and I will be making more! I will be sellings these at the Garibaldi Elementary School Craft Fair on December 2, 2010 as well as I will have them available in my studio for purchase.

New Studio = New Blog!
My old blog hasn't been updated much in the last year as I haven't touched clay in over 12 months! Isn't that horrible? I have been busy with my corporate recruiting business (www.PlacementPros.ca) which I started back in March 2008. It is rolling along nicely so it is time to focus on pottery.
Luckily I have had my crochet to fall back on in order to have a creative outlet. I have also been dabbling in sprouting and crochet wire jewelry.
My new pottery studio will be completed in a couple of weeks. I am so excited to finally have a space I can call my own! For updates on classes, events and art shows please drop by my website at www.LisaElbertsen.com
I will be updating this blog on a regular basis with new pottery and crochet projects and mainly pictures of things that I am working on. Stay tuned!
Feel free to visit my old blog (2006 - 2009) as that is where it all started.
